Residents blaze new trail around Laurel Lake's
own "Emerald Necklace" of green space

April 30, 2010One day soon, people who live at Laurel Lake Retirement Community in Hudson will be able to hike from one end of the 155-acre property to the other.

It's all thanks to a growing network of nature trails and paved walkways that wind throughout the green belt encircling Laurel Lake homes.

With help from resident volunteer Frank Spring, project coordinators Dick Hein and Dick Leppo have been busy building the latest East Trail segment. They're using power tools, a Bobcat and good old-fashioned muscle to clear brush, define the trail, lay down mulch and install trail markers fabricated in the Laurel Lake Workshop.

Local scouts have also lent a hand with trail development in the past year, constructing boardwalks across muddy sections of the path to complete Eagle Scout requirements.

With luck, Laurel Lake's newest trail could be ready in time for National Trails Day®, an annual event sponsored by the American Hiking Society ( www.AmericanHiking.org ) on Saturday, June 5, 2010.

National Trails Day® inspires the public to seek out favorite trails, learn about the environment and participate in trail work projects. NTD also provides an opportunity to thank volunteers, land managing agencies, and outdoor-minded businesses for their support in developing and maintaining trails.
