Panel Discussion at Laurel Lake draws attention to
modern day slavery in the world, U.S. and Ohio

March 5, 2010 If you think slavery in the U.S. ended when Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation in 1865, think again.

Human trafficking is modern-day slavery, a worldwide scourge that ensnares millions of young children, teens, men and women. The U.S. State Department estimates there are 12.3 million people throughout the world currently trapped in forced labor and sexual servitude, with up to 800,000 people trafficked across international borders each year.  As many as 20,000 of these victims are being sold into slavery annually in the U.S.  After drug dealing, the modern-day slave trade is the second largest criminal industry in the world, and the fastest growing.

On Monday, April 12 from 3 to 4:30 p.m., Laurel Lake Retirement Community will host a Panel Discussion on Human Trafficking with representatives from the Collaborative Initiative to End Human Trafficking.

The event is sponsored by the Laurel Lake Social Justice Commission, and is free and open to the public. Laurel Lake is located at 200 Laurel Lake Drive in Hudson.

The Collaborative Initiative to End Human Trafficking is a group of concerned people in northeast Ohio whose mission is to educate and advocate for the prevention and abolition of human trafficking while connecting services for victims. The Collaborative provides educational forums for university and high school students, social service agencies, health care providers, church groups and professional organizations throughout Cuyahoga, Lorain, Geauga, Stark, and Summit counties. The Collaborative networks with law enforcement, social service providers, and health care organizations so that assistance can be provided to victims.
