Ohio Buckeye Trail virtual hiking challenge begins at Laurel Lake
June 9, 2009 -- At Laurel Lake Retirement Community in Hudson, seven teams of residents and staff members are off and hiking.
A total of 40 people have joined forces to virtually "hike" the Buckeye Trail, using pedometers to log their steps. The actual 1,311 mile Buckeye Trail winds throughout the State of Ohio, from a beachhead on the shores of Lake Erie in Cleveland to a bluff overlooking the Ohio River in Cincinnati.
The teams -- with names like the Blue Blazes, the Fit Fiddles, the Happy Hikers, the Wonderful Walkers, the Trail Trekkers and the Buckeye Backpackers -- wear pedometers to log their steps as they go about their daily lives -- walking on campus, hiking the local parks, hitting the treadmill or stairmaster, walking the dog, even grocery shopping!
Each team's progress is tracked on a giant Ohio map in the Laurel Lake fitness center. A Challenge Celebration with food, fun and prizes will mark the end of the competition.
The Buckeye Trail Challenge is one of many ways that Laurel Lake is promoting longevity and wellness for older adults, with an emphasis on active lifestyle, healthy diet, fitness programs, and continuing education classes to sharpen the mind, social ties and purpose.
