Laurel Lake to celebrate Arbor Day, 20th Anniversary
with tree planting and kite flying
April 10, 2009 -- Laurel Lake will continue its 20th Anniversary celebration with a Tree Planting Ceremony on Arbor Day, Friday, April 24 at 1 p.m. on the front lawn of Laurel Lake’s Westwood apartment building. Kite Flying will also be offered to residents, staff, family and friends of the community at a start time to be announced.
A yellow buckeye tree will be planted to symbolize the roots that people have put down in the Laurel Lake community over the last twenty years, and the strong connection with nature that residents of this 150-acre community enjoy, with its many gardens, outdoor living spaces, forests, lakes and sheltered wetlands.
The buckeye is an emblem of strength, sturdiness and good fortune. Native Americans who once inhabited the Ohio Valley called the nut of the buckeye tree "hetuck" or "eye of the buck" because it resembled a deer’s eye.
Arbor Day was first established in 1872 in Nebraska with the planting of a million trees. It has become an international day to encourage tree planting and care. Trees reduce erosion, cut energy costs, moderate the temperature, clean the air, produce life-giving oxygen, provide habitat for wildlife, give us paper, lumber and fuel, increase property values, beautify communities, and are a source of joy wherever they are planted.
Now celebrating its 20th Anniversary, Laurel Lake Retirement Community offers a remarkable lifestyle choice for adults who wish to continue leading active lives filled with travel, fitness, volunteer, work, cultural and lifelong learning pursuits.
